I managed to get hold of the premier screening tickets for Dragonball Evolution and watched it 2 days before it was first released in the cinemas which was earlier today. It was said to be the FIRST official screening worldwide, so many securities before the movie, we even have to surrender our handphones and cameras omg! But too bad, it was just a Dragonball movie lolol~

*Warning*
If i spoiled the movie for you later on, i apologize but blame it on yourself first because you chose to read this entry ahah! You still have time to skip this entry below icon razz Dragonball Evolution Movie Review (2009)

Anyway back to the review. To be truthful, looking at the casts before the movie was released, i was already hoping for the worst before i stepped my foot into the cinema hall during the premier screening. Then when the show started reeling, i was suprised to see Stephen Chow’s name in the movie. I didn’t know he was one of the producer lolol. Well, that explains why the movie is somewhat lame and funny here and there i guess.

The storyline was too short and simple. It was as if they were rushing to finish off the movie. And the plot changes a lot from the original. While watching the movie, i thought how they could have added some elements here and there, adding some scenes in between to make it more interesting and so on. I think they could have made the movie a good one (despite the unoriginal-looked actors lol) if they probably get more budget or adding more stuff into it and maybe made it like a continuing trilogy such as the Harry Potter series 1,2,3,etc.. I really really think that there was so much more to add you see.

Besides that, Goku studying in an american high school? Compared to the original anime, he wasn’t even in a high school lol! In this movie, Goku was a playful kinda person. He tries to cheat during training, using a girl as a motivation in training just to get close to her and so on which is different from the original Dragonball series lol~ (you’ll know what i mean if you’ve watched the movie)

And did Goku got killed by a gunshot and got resurrected by Roshi by a Kame Hame Ha?!? LOLOL! Wazzdizzweyhh~

The romance was too cheesy. The start of this movie, you don’t see anyone coupling with each other. The end of the movie, you can see 2 couples already. It’s so simple, just a few conversations and scenes and they fell in love with each other wtf. If the same thing were to imply in this real world, hohoho~ =X

The CGI effects in this movie were promising, although i think they kinda overused it throughout the movie as well. Goku seems so unnatural and so American-ised that his Kame Hame Ha move was so lame lol! Especially the chant he used during the summoning of the Shen Long almost the end of the movie. Omg i LOLed at that ahaha! It just sounds too weird. Bad lines, bad dialogues.

And now the appearances! One thing for sure is that the actresses are hawt ahah! Chi Chi and Bulma!~ (=
And Justin Chatwin looks good playing Goku too, although it’s just kinda weird lol. Piccolo looked like some Star Trek ugly character ahah.

For those all-time hard fans of Dragonball series, this movie might disappoint for you guys. But well, although the movie wasn’t really good but i think that an average movie is at least better than a bad movie. And Dragonball Evolution – i think it’s an average one for me. It sure wasn’t a great movie, but at least it’s entertaining and fun to watch in my opinion. Maybe it was those funny scenes that made me laugh which really helps.

My verdict? 5/10 (Yes, i know i’m kind in giving ratings icon razz Dragonball Evolution Movie Review (2009) )

Ohh nonetheless, thanks Nuffnang for the premier screening tickets. If it’s not because of the free tickets, i wouldn’t have watched this movie and do this review anyway ahah! I’d most probably spend the movie ticket money to buy a McDonalds set meal instead lmao!

Okayy one last picture,
dedicated to those Jamie Chung & Emmy Rossum fans out there!

  2. aronil says:

already knew it would disappoint which is why i’m not touching it lol. thanks for the review confirmed my thoughts on how bad it would

  3. bd fabregas says:

just 5/10?? you must be really kind in giving rating to this movie, right..

  4. bryanlyt says:

[Aj] lolol is it? pardon me, i haven’t watched cicakman so i don’t know ahah

[aronil] hmmm maybe ur opinion is different from mine? maybe u should just download the movie when it’s available (=

[bd fabregas] i sense sarcasm.. lol~

  5. jayson says:

Yeah… the only reason why this movie got 4 out of the 5/10 points was cuz of Jamie Chung & Emmy Rossum. They were hot in the movie but that was pretty much it. There was probably just 1 fighting scene that was somewhat decent (the beginning where goku didn’t fight against the school bullies), but that was about it. I would not spend my money on this movie and i agree, mcdonalds meal is better than this… i saw the movie online yesterday on 03/18 lol… lets just say that they should have casted a japanese acting as goku since jap’s are known for their wild and awesome anime cosplay. for the directors… u shouldn’t have modified the story line… stick with the orginal… u’ll attract more fans that way. and the end was really gay… anyways, not worth watching. it fails. i rather watch the whole dbz series 5 times in a row than watch this a 2nd time ._. <3 Jamie Chung and Emmy Rossum. =]

  6. Chargin' says:

Well, that’s pretty lame to see Goku first off. I was really hopeful for this to be good and maybe include oh, say, Vegeta and Frieza! Hahaha, how gay that the one American actor is Goku, and he’s in between the adult and the kid versions. WTH happened? The anime storyline is so indepth so they really did a poor job I think. Agree with Jayson, it fails. CGI is fine, but there’s a whole lot of brute strength missing imho. Perhaps as mentioned, with lots of feedback and a larger budget it might develop, but wow, what did they do to my anime?!?!

  7. maRCus says:

huwaaah.. liddat oso can ah?! geng! i thot i wasnt a very nice movie.. STILL got ppl google for it.. wahhahaa.. your luck! XD

  8. Scorpion says:

This Movie plain and simple insults our intelligence, I mean I’m no Geek, but tham they were way off!, this should not even be called dragonball, because of stupid 20th Century Fox, now dragonball is ruined, if someone wanted to make a better movie with the real story that Akira Toriyama made, they made so many changes and mistakes that the dragonball that we know is gone forever, on Watchmen they made some changes but only so the essence of the show could be shown on film, but Dragonball is dead they killed it, I’m sorry Akira Toriyama they ruined your work and about every Anime , and dbz fan out there.

It is illogical to spend the money on copyrights if you’re not even going to use the story.

Zac Bertschy of Anime News Network, originally disgusted at Otaku decrying the film via leaked set shots and trailers even before the movie was released, gave the movie an overall F grade, admitting that “The fans were right.” Criticizing the films lack of explaining plot elements to its hackmead storyline and lackluster effort by the actors, he suggested that the film “Might be fun when you’re hammered and surrounded by friends. Or suicidal, and need something to push you over the edge.”

  9. NONE OF US WILL SEE HEAVEN says:

    WTF you guys expected?

Was street fighter a good movie?
Was mortal kombat a good movie?
    There is a perfect women?

of course not… movies coming from anime or games are pure shit.

    • MrDragonball says:

i have to agree with you tekken movie was crap the same goes for street fighter mortal kombat tomb raider but i wont say the same for resident evil sure they didnt follow the storyline and the first movie was quite dull and looked low budget but it shows alot more relativity to the game but i do agree with your view on this film it is an insult to the anime and all its follwers

  10. cdeq says:

Ahhhhhh…. wtf. i’m very-very sad when finish watch this movie… very disapointed. feels like i’m burn my money…. i will give 2/10 (2 points only for CGI). Anything else was sh** =(

  12. MIKE WULF says:

all i have to say is i am a 40 yr old dbz fan and i refuse to watch this movie other than what is forced on me in commercials. I refuse to even pay the 1.07 redbox fee to watch this. How the HELL did the (sorry, race insert here) asian folks tied to this move ALLOW an american to play GOKU!!!!!!!! thats is a TOTAL dis to the DBZ franchise!!!!!!! I’m SO disappointed. I LOVE dbz, use to hate it for all the talkin and gruntin that would span 2-4 episodes before they start fighting. I was hooked when Goku went Super against Frieza. I even cornered the name COOLER in XBOX Live, yes that is I. /cry R.I.P. DBZ

  13. The Keen says:

Why is Hollywood still not getting it! Why cant they just stick to the original and make a fantastic live action movie that sticks to the original plot?! That’s all i ever wanted to see, and those boneheads cannot deliver. shame, shame on Hollywood.

  14. DBZ fan says:

Okay,Let’s start from the top.I love DBZ and Dragonball.I’ve hoped for years that someone would make a movie out of DBZ.So when my brother informed me that the movie was coming out I was very excited to see it…that is until I saw the previews.ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!! What happened?! This is not the Goku I know!First things first, WHY IS HE WHITE?! The entire cast should have been asian, just like the series! There’s no white people, or black people, or any other race for that matter. Why can’t we just follow the original format? Futhermore, why are we in America? Goku didn’t even go to school. Plus, he was a fighter not a stupid school boy trying to get a girls attention so he practiced fighting b/c of that. Come on! Did they do any research before they made this movie? Why does Piccolo look like something from Star Wars? He is suppose to be green with antennas and tall in stature. And Goku is suppose to be tall with a muscular build. And why is Bulma’s hair not blue everywhere? Why is there only one blue streak? I am completely disgusted by this. This movie screams LOW BUDGET and poor script. I refuse to go watch it. This movie insults any true Dragonball fan who knows anything about the series. This cartoon had potential to be a big hit with multiple sequels like Spider-Man or X-Men. But, the studio completely screwed it up. The series was popular just like it was. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

  15. Anasuke says:

Realy guys you are way too hard!Yeah it’s true that the story is really but really bad but the movie himself is really good……Well at least for the poeple who don’t know Dragon Ball…. b^^d

  16. legendary-ssj says:

Respect for DBZ fans reply, accept for the fact that he says that ”all” the actors should be asian. He is right Goku NEVER cheated or ever thought about doing it. He doesn’t care about what other people think about him, like in the movie he wants to be popular. Justin chatwin was a bad choice, he looks kind of stoned doesn’t have goku’s posture.

  17. MrDragonball says:

the movie waz okay i suppose it sure does beat tekkens movie but for all the people who have watched the anime can see that they have bodged up a few key elements to the film for example when have you ever seen goku travel through the air with a kamehameha and master roshi reviving him with one thats absurd the actors portray basically none of the animes characteristics such as chi chi’s temper or gokus insationable appetite for battle i can’t give this a rating really not if im basing it on the actual anime because i’d find that to be an insult if they had shown more relativity to the anime and stuck abit more to the original storyline then that would be a different story alltogether but a 3/10 is generous enough
